I'm not sure how a guy who graduated from Harvard Law and steadfastly refused to do anything of consequence with the myriad opportunities laid out before him is qualified in any way to talk about people like McCain and Obama.  Also, I think there was a lot going on for McCain in 2008 besides Obama being black.  I

Yeah, this pretty much says it.  I'd go one farther and say there's no such thing as an 'acceptable' reason to like or dislike any given work of art / entertainment.  It is after all entertainment; it's by definition a matter of personal taste.  People like what they like.

I am not stupid enough to claim no one has ever been raped at the Naval Academy, but as someone who spent four years there I will say with no hesitation that it's the safest college campus if not one of the safest places for a young woman to live in America.  The whole time I was there, I knew of exactly one guy who

Motoperpetuo, we're actually way past that…the Navy, like a lot of parts of American life, has gone through an extended hangover I like to call "we're not in the 80s any more."  It's been a long time since hooking up with pros in Manila was condoned or even went unpunished when guys are caught doing it.  We cracked

WCOG, I wouldn't go with happy, but I think the Sailors respond really well when they see the leadership take some time and talk about how policy applies in their lives rather than just making them sign an affidavit that they read the rules and then hammering them when they get out of line.  Liberty plans, for

…or I could have just looked it up before posting that.  George Clooney Failsafe does in fact exist, if you're interested:

I could be wrong, but did Failsafe get remade with George Clooney in the role of one of the pilots recently?  I was really shitfaced at a party and could swear that was on one of the TVs, but that's not the most reliable bit of evidence for the existence of such a film.

Pippa and Badass, thanks much for sharing.

As a Navy Officer, I really want to some day spend some time in the military that I see described here on the AV Club where people blindly follow orders from superiors and conformity is the order of the day.  It sounds like a much easier place to be in charge than has been my experience, but certainly a lot less

I don't get really hung up on this number because I think numbers are
only as good as their veracity and reliability, and I don't see how 20%
could possibly be accurate or very relevant.  Sexual assault is notoriously under-reported both in the military and out, and means something different to just about everybody.
