Now you've reminded me of the Jason Alexander tv version of Bye Bye Birdie. Another foul excrescence.

Even Music Man was made family-friendly for the movie version, which is a shame. "The Sadder but Wiser Girl" is one of my favorite numbers.
"I prefer to take a chance
On a more adult romance…
No dewy young miss who keeps insisting,
All the time she keeps resisting…"

I tried to watch and thought it was pretty awful, in the bad sense of awful. Broderick has the charisma of damp toast, which made him totally wrong for the Harold Hill part.
If you want to see what a musical should be like, watch the original movie.

I agree completely about Robert Preston—you know, he had to audition multiple times to get the job on Broadway, and even up to opening night, the producers wanted to replace him—but how about Alan Cuming?

I seem to recall turning off the Broderick/Chenowyth version before it ended.
I don't think anyone can outshine Robert Preston, but maybe Alan Cuming? I think he could give it a good shot.

Who from the AV Club will attend this year? (Is L. Pierce busy?)

Habbakkuk of ice

If it weren't for the ink, I'd suggest putting it behind you in the smallest room in the house.

"I'm an atheist, and I have a gun."
May be worth a try.

"Vagueness is at times necessary and mystery is never in short supply, but I don't think they're anything to worship."
~ John Allen Paulos

There's the Jesus Suit theory, that the person who was crucified was just some ordinary guy whose body was possessed by god for the last few years and then also abandoned by god just as the scourging was about to start. So the ordinary guy is more or less unconscious for three years and wakes up to torture and no

I guess I missed the part where I sent anyone videos of anything, unless putting in a link for anyone here to click on—which I seem to recall is pretty common practice here—is some sort of evangelizing. An attempted propaganda coup? Geez. No overstatement there.

You seem to think that biblical literalists don't cherrypick. Naive, but charming.

I live in Texas and can't get the live stream to work. So I wait a couple of days and watch the current show on the website; otherwise, youtube for fulls shows and clips.
I recommend the two "You're kind of a pathetic man" clips for new-comers.

So? Was the young African-American man Obama or not?

Christian evangelicals tend not to be terribly educated (or perhaps that's exactly the problem—they've been terribly educated).
They're the sort of person who claims to have common sense, as if that somehow outweighs knowledge.
Hence, they dislike (or hate or fear) "book-learning" and the people who bothered to work

Yes, it's the suffocation that kills. Funny how many people don't get that the Roman soldier who stabs Jesus is actually doing him a favor, helping him to bleed out so he'll die sooner.

I agree that fanaticism of any kind that injures others is bad.

I watched Ellie the first season and really liked it. I liked JLD a lot more in it than I ever had in Seinfeld.

After you've run out of bullets and thrown your gun away, there's just one thing left.
