Robert Clary had a career as a cafe singer.  I had a couple of his recordings.

Green Acres was brilliantly silly.  Also surreal.

Sadly, my parents took me to see Kissin' Cousins.  They liked it.  I didn't get it.
Sad times.

Watch King Creole.  Through most of it he's Elvis the Non-actor, but at one special moment (and I'm not an Elvis fan, either), he's forced up on stage to sing and justlikethat, he turns into Elvis the Star.  It's a wondrous transformation; it really is, and it points towards what made him such a big deal in his day.

Shouldn't that be lightning rather than thunder?

Balok, that's the first movie I thought of.  Love it.  Love most Cagney movies, the song&dance movies the best.

He crapped on talk shows as well?  Interesting talent, I guess, but you'd think the audience for that sort of thing would be limited.

Simon Callow, definitely not a pretty boy but a fine actor with a great voice.

See it—yes.
Read it—not so sure.

You'll love how we pronounce 'fracas.'

Hooray for baking soda, ain't it neat?
And cheers for national backing soda week.
It puts out fires of fat or grease,
Pass the baking soda, please.

Using the phone while driving—clearly, the law means nothing to him.

The cop is cute, but he's no Jeremy Hardy.

If you don't mind my saying so, Scrawler—if you haven't seen English Patient, holy mother of god you don't know what you're missing.

It's easy now to say it doesn't matter, but at the time, it was a very big deal.  Front page stories (oooh—newspapers!), ruined careers, public disgrace, all in the witch hunt era.
You probably aren't too impressed by the "payola" scandal in pop music.

"Passing," back then.  See "Gentlemen's Agreement" for further material.

Van Doren is still probably pretty bangable.
