Rereading some of Reginald Hill's Dalziel and Pascoe novels.  I found one I've apparently had for a few years yet somehow missed reading, and that started me off.

Have you ever read Humboldt's Gift by Saul Bellow?  The protagonist is a decent guy who gets shit on by everyone, and it has a most satisfying ending, the kind of ending most harassed people would opt for.  Best part of the book.
