The inelegant prose was Ewing's, not Mitchell's. He mimicked many different voices in the book, quite successfully imo.

You can read any of Pratchett's books as stand-alone, though going in the right sequence will increase your enjoyment. He's funny (duh!), has a thing for clever plots and his one-line meditations on love and law and poverty are often deeper than what passes for Serious Literature.  
So not Robert Jordan.
