Sadly this is how they tend to review sitcoms: recap the best jokes and then criticize it for 1) not being the show they want it to be; 2) making too many jokes and not enough Character Development.
One of the issues was that neither the comedian nor (most disappointingly) the interviewer could possibly conceive of where the name 'Fine Young Cannibals' came from.
I'd say the theatre kid thing is so culturally pervasive that it hardly counts as punching down. SNL's always mocked over dramatic/hammy theatre.
