I think the thing this show is going for is that in the Old West, you have so many sudden ups and downs. Look at the Swede, Preacher, Bohannon, Elam, and even Durant (albeit by violence here but also lack of funds when he had to swindle that Congressman). You're the toast of the town one moment to collecting bedpans.
