Sheridan and Delenn are more epic characters - they're the ones that are going to save the world, and they rise to the challenge. Garibaldi is a normal guy who gets caught up in epic events, and gets trashed as a result.

If Season 5 had already been renewed, I think they would have ended Season 4 on a cliff-hanger, and had the Byron story arc significantly reduced, which would have been good.

TNG hit a sweet spot. It was the first Trek series since TOS ended, with an occasional movie to fuel people's interest. It came out at a point when there really wasn't a whole lot of sci-fi TV to choose from. And its buoyant optimism about the universe, and mainly episodic structure, gave it a broad appeal.

I have found that, on average, East Asian undergrads tend to be younger socially than their North American peers. They're studious and very hard working, but an adolescence spent cramming for entrance exams under parental supervision does make a difference when it comes to independence and initiative.
