I will only watch The Orville if Norm MacDonald gets at least two (2) lines per episode.

It is an unusual situation when a (recent) former champion isn't ranked highly enough to make it in without any question, so the decision-making surely isn't as clear-cut as normal.

I think you could make a merit-based argument either way. "She does not have a recent tournament record to show what her current capabilities are" would be the merit-based argument against, while "despite her time off, she has proven in the past that she would be strong competition" would be the merit-based argument…
