I definitely see where your friend is coming from. I don't think there are many novels, certainly not many Victorian ones, which look at the psychology of these themes in such detail.

I had to read Villette for a college course. What I took away from it was the theme of adjusting to life in another place, and the isolation that can sometimes bring.
