Mervyn Peake comes to mind as a great stylist. Check out the Gormenghast books if you haven't.

God Emperor of Dune is fascinating and soul-crushingly boring at the same time. It goes into interestingly bizarre directions; at the same time, I've never read a novel that was so committed to denying the readers all things they expect from an engaging story, like conflict, tension and characters they can relate to -

First seasons of Daredevil and Jessica Jones were problematic in that regard for me (and many other viewers) in that they told stories that they were based on relatively straight-forward conflicts and had to annoyingly delay the resolutions in order to fill 13 hours.

So, for those who have seen the entire second season of Daredevil, is it the first time a Netflix Marvel show got its pacing right?

I'll never forget when a Polish TV station aired "Drunken Master" on January the 1st. The entire nation's heads were dizzy from all the previous night's boozing, while Jackie Chan espoused wisdom like "It's not your kung-fu that was weaker than theirs, Master. You just did not have enough wine to drink!". It was the

Just wanted to say that the main event of Roadblock was the most I've enjoyed a main roster since the Cena/Owens bouts. Some great psychology there - a duel between two smart, ruthless dudes who were out there to prove a point.

I have to give it a listen, it sounds hilarious.

I need more wrestlers giving interviews in full kayfabe mode outside of WWE.

Star-crossed lovers is also the setup for Bride with White Hair, bt then Chinese Ghost Story has a rapping Taoist priest. That makes all the difference (and is the kind of HK humor I can completely get behind).

Good to know! But then, so far it also has its charms. I used to be pretty antisocial, now I relish every minute I get to spend with my friends.

I was curious what you thought about Chinese Ghost Story! I love that movie too (although I struggled to sit through the first sequel and never tried the other ones). But then that movie does not seem to be as earnest as Bride with White Hair and has more of a light touch, which made the whole thing easier to swallow.

From my experience, meditation does not help me to fall asleep. It helps me to feel more relaxed about the fact that I can't fall asleep, so that's something I guess.

It does have a lot of familiar wuxia tropes and as you know, if you watch enough HK movies from eighties and nineties, you get used to the melodrama and Casio soundtracks. Judging from the reviews, people who loved the movie were probably not as struck by the bizarre elements as I was and just enjoyed it as a fantasy

It's been a pretty exhausting and stressful week. I'm trying to balance two majors and a part-time job; the job is enough to put food on my table, but when it comes to the university, there is a lot of ancilliary bullshit and some obstinate old fart professors that make it harder than it should be. Overall, I feel

I haven't been thrilled with NXT since KO and Sasha left for good, but this card is FUCKING INCREDIBLE. Much more excited for it than for Mania.

For all the crap people like to dump on Stephanie, she's actually a fantastic heel with an impeccable promo presence; Roman looks like even more of a joke promo-wise when standing up to her. She just need to be used in a smarter way, but then she's likely the one making the decisions…

It's interesting that I had an almost entirely opposite reaction. I stopped watching after the fifth season, but what I enjoyed the most about the show was I thought to be an unexpectedly nuanced central relationship for such a campy series. Dean was, to me, an interestingly multi-layered character - Sam less so, but

Every time I see Bray seemingly being built as a main-event threat, I take a sedative, flush it down with whiskey and blast 'Won't get fooled again'.

I do agree that Ellroy seems to write only two kinds of novels - actually, I felt The Big Nowhere and L.A. Confidential to be almost the same book, sadly. I do prefer him writing a relatively straightforward thriller like White Jazz to an epic monstrosity with gazillion subplots. And even his style works better for me

JJL's voice is something else. I remember watching ExistenZ and being constantly distracted by how sexy is her voice. I could listen to her talk all day!
