At least JK Simmons is shaping up as a lock for Best Supporting Actor. Richly deserved.

"Female teachers seem to merely get a slap on the wrist compared to the hefty jail time male teachers must serve"
Right, you're proving my point here. I'm glad we agree.
Fair enough. I wasn't sure if it was a kidding-on-the-square type deal. I think there is a perception that (attractive) female teachers who pull this stuff skate (e.g., that South Park episode), and while it may be true in some cases, it's definitely not what normally happens.
No, I'm afraid you don't understand how the American criminal justice system works. The prosecutor has two (relevant) roles: charging official and advocate. In the advocate role, the prosecutor is obligated to zealously argue for the state's position, as you suggest. But in the charging role, the prosecutor is…
This comes across as slightly MRAish, like "women have sex with teens and they skate, men get the book thrown at them!"
Poor judgment, and I have no problem with her being fired (and banned from working with that school district again), but charging her with felonies is ridiculous. Prosecutors are power-hungry assholes who love to ruin people's lives.
Don't forget Carrell's nomination for his stirring depiction of "Man With Heavy Makeup and Strange Manner of Speech," a time-honored Oscar favorite.
Oh, you threw in a Friends episode and forgot about "Good Grief." Welp!
"nobody questions whether she had the moral right to commit what is essentially mass brainwashing."
If "Good Grief" doesn't take first, there is no justice. And as they say, no justice, no peace. Burn the AV Club!
Mediocre director teams up with mediocre actor to remake a classic. What could possibly go wrong?
Missed opportunity to work "I Zimbra" into the score for that trailer.
"Before those horrible grand jury results came out, the outcry for the Ferguson case was simply not that significant yet."
"I just don't know if I heard any evidence about Adnan's disposition or
their relationship that makes that motive make sense to me."
It's just kind of a weird point to bring up, is all.
Where are you getting that from the text of the episode?
His acting style, to me, is just obnoxious. He seems out of control as a performer rather than as a character. I hope his shitty personality keeps him from ever performing in film or television again.
So all I was trying to say above is that when you have two suspects, one with a clear motive and one with no known motive, it's more likely that the former committed the crime. Now, if motive is the only basis to distinguish them, that's not enough to convict, although it may be enough to convince a reasonable person…
"Motive isn't present in many crimes - this is a known fact, not a theory."
