This seems somewhat plausible to me. Everyone thought that Adam Driver was an odd choice for a villain in the film, but he does have some resemblance to Mark Hammill and Hayden Christensen, so maybe he was partially cast based on appearance.

My theory is that based on the title of "The Force Awakens" there haven't been any force sensitive people (Jedi or Sith) in the time between the films, but suddenly the main characters are becoming awakened to the Force. It would explain why they are important and why the Jedi are a near myth.
