1967 was one of those embarrassment of riches years at the Oscars—there were some clunkers, sure (paging Doctor Dolittle), but great googly moogly.

Ooh!  I can explain this.  You kind of hit the nail on the head with the coal country observation—the coal companies tend to promote big civic projects like that to illustrate their investment in the community, and how much they care about people and the young ones especially.  (Just don't move the camera—there's

Um…it's hot?  Anyway, fair point—that's a remnant from a time when I thought I could get through these movies in three months or so (and, I could, if I weren't sharing the Netflix account).  (Also, it's when I have the most free time—summers "off" can be one of the perks of teaching.)

Coming Up:

The Rest of The "Best"

I saw The American in a pretty packed house, opening weekend, in Clooney's hometown*—talk about the wrong crowd for a movie.  I know going in that the only reason the local theater got the movie was the Clooney connection—the two old farmers in front of me started talking (loudly) about someone who lost an arm in a

I always wanted to create a Rainer Wolfcastle gimmick account, with the avatar of his stand up special, just to chime in whenever someone was being especially thick or pedantic, and just post "Daht's duh choke".

There's a South Korea?!?!?

Honestly, there were times in the second season when I thought "I need to slow down, because I'm going to miss something that'll be important later", but I was enjoying the show too much to stop.  (Mind you, I've already rewatched about half of season 2, but still.)

So, I started watching Archer a couple weeks ago (via Netflix), and I just finished season 2.  I think I may need to take a break, though, because last night, I dreamed my wife and I had a son, and we named him Wee Baby Seamus.

So, The Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour redux, but with only one game?

Shakespeare or a Browning are the two typical choices…I wish I could be more creative, but the most "unique" part of my wedding (well—the most "unique" part involving something to be read) was printing a Calvin and Hobbes strip into the programs.

Believe me, I'm aware of the Christopher Lloyd connection—I actually added Oogieloves from his list of credits, so I knew where the algorithm's "logic" was coming from.  I just thought it was an amusing mishmash of disparate cinematic choices, that's all.

So, I added The Oogieloves to my Netflix Instant queue out of morbid curiosity, as you do, and here are some of the "similar" movies Netflix thinks I might also like, as a result of my interest in Oogieloves: Jumanji, Free Willy, Baby Geniuses, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Suburban Commando, The Pagemaster, and Back to

Public Enemies?  It wasn't…bad…

@avclub-c252b9390befbfe200d59090a071c413:disqus —because I'm curious, would you say the movie's good, or Depp's good in the movie?  (Or both.)  Cause I'd argue that while the movie's good, he was a bit over the top still.

So, um, there are still a few articles on that other site everyone's been talking about that are still un-commented upon, if anyone wants to plant their flags over yonder.

Lately, I've been watching more and more new stuff (thanks, Netflix!), so my rewatching has slipped—having said that, at a guess, I'd say I rewatch something maybe one in every ten movie experiences or so.  And, honestly, the stuff I rewatch tends to be stuff I've seen enough to know from memory (like Monty Python and

Very well said.  Honestly, your post yesterday (and the responses to it) and your post today are making me more anxious than ever to finally see it, myself.
