I agree. I enjoyed season 2 enough that I finally started reading the books, but reading book 2 made season 2 seem a lot worse in hindsight. Not only did the producers elide or tone down a lot of awesome stuff (which is mostly understandable given TV's limitations), but they also completely changed a lot of major plot…

I'm just reading the books now, and I just got through the part in the third book with the purchasing of the slaves and the immediate aftermath, and that was pretty cool.
