It's funny how that show's general tone seems like that of a fun romp, typical and appropriate for the 8 - 14 set or thereabouts. Then it goes to some of the darkest places I've ever seen in fiction.

Hell I'll even go as far as to say that I can still rock out to some songs from Portrait of an American Family with no irony.

NIN has always been a band where you have to separate the lyrics from the music. Even as an angsty teen, I found most of Reznor's lyrics kind of cringe-worthy. The dude is a musical genius, though. You just have to learn to ignore the words.

I'm of the opinion that the 3 Sixth Doctor serials to check out (for someone who doesn't want to just skip a whole era of the show, but also doesn't want to spend too much time watching depressing crap) are:

I totally agree. The Great Doctors are 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7.

I don't know if either justify inclusion solely on their own merits, but their historical (and in the case of the 3 doctors story arch) importance is probably enough to justify covering them at some point. Can't say I'm in any rush though.

I wonder to what extent the Rappin' Ringmaster is responsible for keeping TGSitG's reputation fairly middling. It's a pretty embarrassing moment to show your friends who aren't sold on Who yet, but as you say it's such a small thing in an otherwise killer serial.

Good call. I was at a total loss as to how to convey that, yes, it was meant to be seen as Bran and Rickon without confirming that no, they're actually fake-outs. I don't think they bought it.

Though Doctor Who is too diverse for me ever to name a definitive favorite, The War Games is the one I name if pressed. It has all of my favorite elements of Doctor Who. Troughton is my favorite Doctor, it has a mix of well done historical and well-done scifi settings (Which are well contrasted) and I even prefer the

The War Chief is the obvious precursor to the Master from a writing standpoint, but what evidence is there that they were ever meant to be the same person? That just seems… unnecessary.

This revelation is doing a lot to recontextualize and redeem a number of themes that weren't really working for me this season. It's also making me realize that

Tossin, I agree that most old-series villains have sucked in the new series but that had a lot more to do with Davies' writing style than anything else. In particular his way of bringing back old nemeses did little more than parade them in front of you and milk the recognition for all it was worth. It felt even more

Indeed everyone seems to be forgetting that this movie always sucked. I want those fucking CGI critters out of THX1138 dammit!
