Especially in the second season, when it grew into being actually funny and charming, instead of just charming. I remember watching one episode (the douchebag intervention) and being shocked at how much I was laughing. They built the characters first, and then the comedy followed.

I'm probably just being humorless in response to a joke, but..

What bugged me most about Jeff's was the ultra-hacky "baseball game" / 'big recital" / "whatever kid event" climax of it. It still would have been problematic, but it would have landed about twenty times better if he'd just said he was supposed to hang out with the kid and bailed.

Yup, that's what I figured they're doing. There was definitely a story of Ramsay torturing people by letting them think they're escaping and then hunting them down for sport. A higher class nerd can give the citation, maybe?
