I don't think Ludlum's are actually "ghostwritten." All of his topic-relevant books that I've seen say something along the lines of "Robert Ludlum Presents TITLE written by NAME".

They're fictional puppet characters, so "it's just a piece of art" doesn't really work when the original thing is also "just a piece of art." A character's fictional narrative is typically impacted by any impactful depictions of that character, not simply the "prime" one.
