I don't think Ludlum's are actually "ghostwritten."  All of his topic-relevant books that I've seen say something along the lines of "Robert Ludlum Presents TITLE written by NAME".

It's not an assumption, its Word of God. Children's Television Workshop stated that their relationship was a friendship back when some right-wingers were making hay about them. 
Additionally, as character traits are composed solely from what occurs in a narrative, 'they've been a couple all along' is an impossible…

They're fictional puppet characters, so "it's just a piece of art" doesn't really work when the original thing is also "just a piece of art." A character's fictional narrative is typically impacted by any impactful depictions of that character, not simply the "prime" one.
