I think it falls apart, but only from a narrative perspective and completely on purpose, and if that's a problem for someone I'd say that they're probably that peculiar but very common kind of plot-obsessed film nerd with whom I don't want to have a conversation.

I'm pretty sure I read it on a couple of legitimate sites. I think it's even slowed down in proportion to the supposed time speed differences between layers.
The original also works because it's purposely over-the-top; Kirk is trying to convince Khan that he is actually trapped and doesn't have an easy escape. That's part of the beauty of the line.
