I think that Gaiman's work in general, and especially American Gods, are about tropes and archetypes, so it's not surprising that a lot of sexism bleeds through. I get the sense that he sincerely tries to learn and do better, though as a middle-aged, successful white man it can be hard to see through your own biases.
