Heh. I would also wonder if Welk misunderstood the request. But, I wasn't saying that the man had no sense of humor, just that his show was meant to be exactly what it appeared to be, and not some sort of ironic statement. I think he was giving people what (he thought) they wanted and was happy to do it.

@avclub-bca3531762af8a993c4f60c48fd5e33b:disqus I wouldn't be surprised at all to hear that the musicians themselves would be a rowdy bunch. That seems to be common among touring musicians of all sorts.

I honestly think he was serious. I've never heard any stories about him to indicate that he was anything other than what Todd describes: a Midwesterner whose idea of a wild party was a polka band and maybe some beer.

So here's a pretty amazing artifact from the early 1970s. Along with Lawrence Welk, Hee Haw was also bumped from network schedules and went into syndication. In response, Roy Clark (of Hee Haw) wrote "The Lawrence Welk Hee Haw Counter-Revolutionary Polka".

I think camp has to have a level of self-awareness that Welk did not have.

Unlikely AVC would make a job announcement in a Newswire about a new Tyler Perry show. Unless Tyler Perry has taken over the AVC. Tyler Perry's The Onion AV Club has a certain ring, doesn't it…?

As the director, I assume Brooks can be given credit for making sure that the old Frankenstein tropes were faithfully reproduced in a way that supported the hilarious script.

My experience is that it's not nearly as well-known. Everyone knows of his parodies, especially Blazing Saddles. But The Producers doesn't quite fit that mold.
