I have a friend who thinks A Christmas Story is a cruel, unpleasant story about a domineering father, hapless mother, and a son who is constantly tormented by bullies, both children and adults.

From my middle-aged perspective, there ain't much difference between 18 and 22. Although, at the time, it does seem pretty vast. I guess it depends on life-experience and such. Back in great-great-grandpappy's day, your average 18 year old probably had been working in the fields or a factory for 4 or 5 years.
