Yes, Monty Python is "university" humour, as were Blackadder and The Young Ones. The British version of vaudeville was apparently "music hall", which the Pythons obviously draw on, but which is apparently more purely represented by Benny Hill.

I think maybe there was also something in their standard union contracts with performers that limited how many times they could rerun a show domestically.

There have been occasions where I found that what I thought was just absurdism had a political or social context (e.g. showing a picture of Edward Heath while saying something silly under it).
