I work in MA, and the OUI law looks incredibly scary… but there are little exceptions all over the place that can, in practice, dramatically reduce the severity of the penalties faced by an "ordinary" first offender (i.e., there was no accident, it wasn't a minor driver, their license was in good order otherwise, etc.)
