yeah, but Brando was going to be physical with her and she knew that because of the content of the scene. The scene wasn't a surprise just the butter.
Like did they think she wouldn't give an honest enough performance of being raped because she wasn't uncomfortable enough? And butter was supposed to do something?

My point was that she already knew there was a rape scene but according to the dir they wanted to get some kind of raw performance out of her so they used butter. That's what the director says. He didn't say the physical nature of the scene was anything they hadn't agreed on.

I dunno. They're both unpleasant.

I don't there's a drop in director because the first three are very good directors in other movies, but there is a drop in quality.
