Yeah, the West University & Montrose (which has Hermann park in it) areas are quite lovely as is River Oaks (where the rich people live)and Memorial Drive. Those are all to the west of downtown. The Heights north of downtown is a really lovely older neighborhood. (It's where the barbershop in the movie is.) Downtown

I lived in Houston for a while and the barber shop in the movie is where I used to get my hair cut. (And the laundromat you can see through the windows across the street is where I did my laundry.)  Best haircuts I've ever had.  Moved to Boston in 2006 but still haven't found a barber as good as that guy. This truly is the darkest timeline.

Man, the whole thing is just so smug.  Everybody in it is trying way too hard to be cool and there's nothing more uncool than to be exerting obvious effort at it.  And don't get me started about whatever the hell was going on with the President in his hospital bed, because whatever it was it wasn't funny.

Apropos of very little, but I just re-watched Buckaroo Banzai for the first time since it became a "cult" film on VHS in the '80's (when I was it's target demographic.)  It does not hold up.  And I don't mean in an "I'm older and (marginally) more sophisticated now, but I can see what it was that I first responded to"

@avclub-f62296b9393b6ab9229ebde91ed8469f:disqus I agree that what ever Deckard's true nature was, Batty thought he was human.  And intellectually, it doesn't make any difference.  But practically, from an audience standpoint,  thinking  that Deckard is a replicant changes the resonances of the scene for (I believe)

Interesting.  I'll check out the 2007 version after all then.  I just think that Ridley Scott saying "Deckard is a replicant"  diminishes the "what is the actual differences between humans and replicants" subtext.

The Lois figuring out Clark is Superman scene is (potentially) MUCH better in Donner's cut.  The only thing that exists of it is a screen test for the audition of Reeve and Kidder so it is awkward and a bit clunky but if Donner had gotten a chance to film it for real it would have been great.
