My guess: The killer became a clean family man after moving away from New York, Patty tries to hire him to kill Ellen again, he tells Ellen, they create fake evidence for Patty (Ellen lying in a puddle of blood), Patty pays him, Patty goes to jail for conspiracy to commit murder.

I'm interesting in hearing more about the thought process that went into the big twists/shock moments towards the end of season 2. The writers made a number of uncharacterically bold decisions there that could easily have sunk the show if they hadn't been done just right.
