I'm a little surprised really that I had to go this far in the comments section to find a post like this.

I agree that the he does get way too much slack regarding direct disobedience of orders, but also think that Sisko's position as the Emissary helps him a lot. It gives him a lot of political clout, even it's an uncomfortable position.

Cardassians do love airing just how smart they are and how they have everything figured out. My favorite thing about "Civil Defense" is imagining all the hours of personal messages to various Guls that never saw the light of day. They love a good monologue. Even in defeat, Tain rambles on about how if he'd just done

I admire Sisko's respect for the company man. I can imagine most officers would have confined him to quarters.

That's the main message I took away from this two-parter: "Holy shit the Dominion is really good at what it does. We're all fucked, right?"

Sisko being in charge of the most important space station in the galaxy probably helps. Starfleet also has a history of rewarding their officers for actions that get the job done, regardless of orders. And don't forget, this is pretty much the frontier of Federation space. There's no way to keep track of everything

A knuckle sandwich!

A knuckle sandwich!

I didn't. Because that wouldn't make any sense, even for this show.

See, I thought Daryl was laying a Cherokee Rose on Carol's grave. He gave her a Cherokee Rose when the group was still searching for Sophia and he wouldn't give up. I interpreted it as him not giving up on Carol.
