I think that's pretty accurate. It seems like the critics want the antihero trend to be over, but I don't know how the cable networks could create prestige dramas about any other kind of protagonist.

Yeah, but Kirk's still fairly young in Wrath of Khan and then after he beats Khan and says goodbye to Spock, he doesn't feel old anymore. That could have been the beginning of a new arc of stories instead of the beginning to a not-completely-tight trilogy.
