It really takes off with the Darwyn Cooke issue - in general, the "Times Past" bits are a lot more interesting than the actual, normal narrative… though the Barcelona arc is a lot of fun.

Pixie, I sincerely think it's because they couldn't think of another female character that wasn't either embargoed by Didio or already dead, and they badly needed some female characters and creators to deflect some criticism from all the other fridgings.

To be fair, I don't think it was intended to bring in young readers at all - DC execs have been VERY clear that they don't think that's an audience that will make them money.  I'm not sure why they don't think that, but it's true.  If you go through the New 52 books, most would be a hard PG-13 or a soft R, honestly.

Yeah. I guess they wanted to update it for post DADT, but given that Black Widow was ex-KGB for, like, 20 years after the KGB vanished, I think the DADT one could have stuck around for some time.  It was a remarkably touching origin.

For some reason, now that Azzarello has revealed that this origin is fake, I find the whole 'clay' thing to have become really ridiculous in retrospect.  Like, seriously, Wonder Woman and AN ENTIRE ISLAND OF WOMEN believed that for over two decades?  Did Hippolyta just stay away from the island through the whole

There are three 'big' WW runs in the modern age.

Hard Time is fucking amazing, and is what got me into Hellblazer.  Azzarello's run is still my favorite, honestly.  Ellis' one-shots were fun, but I couldn't really get behind "Haunted".  Carey's was a huge, awesome epic, but it didn't feel as brutal and haunting as Azz's.  Ennis' just felt like standard Ennis "Ooooo

My opinion: the first story was only so-so, in part because it was clearly unfinished (it ends saying "To be continued in 2013") and felt utterly pointless. I also disliked what it did with the Red Hood stuff.

I didn't read Batwoman #0, but I remember her origin in "Go" had her kicked out while she was still in training.  Is that no longer the case?
