really good movie
Funny you should include it in the NCC, since when I first saw it I thought it would be a lot "cultier" because I'd heard it involved aliens! Well, obviously it's not about aliens, but it DOES have a dreamlike quality for much of its running time.

Pretty sure they both liked Passing Strange the best. They both gave it an A- and raved about it. Everything else got B's or less.

GFE, passing strange
I heard that The Girlfriend Experience is the first-ever movie to mention Obama. So there's that.

Yeah it's weird that Brooklyn's Finest was the first of the fest to get picked up since reviews have been largely negative. I'm curious about it though, I really liked most of Fuqua's Training Day and BF's cast is good.

"Usually when Lee fails horribly it's at least an audacious, ambitious, noble failure"

distribution
Hey Noel and Nabin, keep us posted on distribution deals if'n you hear about them. I heard that Humpday got picked up by Magnolia Pictures, but the only other thing I've heard is that the cop drama Brooklyn's Finest got picked up by some new company (are either of you seeing Brooklyn's Finest there?). I

the party
Man, you talked a lot about how drunk you were but you didn't actually give us details of the par-tay…

horny jews
Nathan, you're like a Philip Roth protagonist minus the humorlessness. What I'm saying is that you're one goddamned horny Jew. And we love you for it.

the glass house
I know this is a topic that's been in the filmcrit hopper for a little while now, but do you think it's appropriate to write about a movie that you only watched half of? I know this is just blogging and not a proper review, but I don't think your readers can get much out of a piece that goes, "Well,

Sam Rockwell was never gone. He's in like three movies a year. And he's great in all of them even if the movie stinks.

lolz
Calf implants! Scott, you irreverent so-and-so.

i mainly remember a lot of blue-tinted lighting
Ah, 1990, the year that brought us not one, not two, but THREE quality gangster films: Goodfellas, Milller's Crossing, and King of New York. Plus NCC canon entry Miami Blues, After Dark My Sweet, and even the crime comedy Quick Change. And some other good movies that

joe, volcano, etc
Nathan Rabin is leading the charge of regrettable overcorrecting for Joe vs the Volcano's initial drubbing. Yes, it's better than its reputation-circa-1990 would suggest, but it's not nearly as good as its reputation-circa-2009 would suggest. It's just an okay movie with a few good ideas and a few

D'oh. I should start reading whole sentences.

greed
Why you gotta be so greedy, showbiz creative types? I give Matt Weiner all the props in the world for creating the best show on TV, but 10 mil per episode? What human needs that much money?

Here's an idea
How about this as an inventory: projects that *should* get revamped because they were screwed up the first time around. THE SHADOW would be a good example, as per Rabin's recent MYOF on the Baldwin movie. Let's do it right this time! (Also: SOYLENT GREEN.)

video killed the celluloid star
I think about the DV-vs.-film question a lot these days. It seems like the only filmmakers who have really figured out how to make DV look good are the Asians. Although we've got guys like David Fincher and Michael Mann who are paving the way for the digitization of cinema. Anyone
