You probably have in mind "A Passage to India" and/or "The Bridge on the River Kwai," but David Lean made some great films that weren't middlebrow Oscar bait, like "Brief Encounter" and "Great Expectations".

I'd rephrase that slightly:  "Gone with the Wind" is "The English Patient" for retards! (sort of). Not that I love "The English Patient".

Watching "Slumdog" was one of the worst experiences of my movie-going life. It sealed Danny Boyle for me as the worst director of his generation. He's so freaking spazzy with his cuts, angles, choice of music, etc. Plus the overt religious theme is goofy if you're a mentally-developed adult.

"The English Patient" is pretty good, but don't bother with "Around the World in 80 Days," which is one of the worst BP winners ever; utter garbage, really.
