That picture presumably was before the Soviet invasion, which was in November of 1979. And here's the thing: the Russians totally did invade one of their neighbors, and that's bad. And here's another thing: their decade-long involvement there was one of the prime reasons behind the fall of Communism, which was good.…
Before Phillip whipped out the gun I was thinking "please don't let that guy be Osama."
Yes, to me that's the most unrealistic thing in the show. Not that I care, because this show kicks ass—but the notion that you could learn a foreign language in your adulthood and speak it that cleanly is just silly.
Unless I'm mistaken you can show anything you want on a "non-pay cable" channel. FCC rules only apply to broadcast networks.

I still have no idea what Baxter's thing is that Thomas was apparently holding over her. Did they ever say?
They were setting up a double gold-digger scheme, but the daughter's heart wasn't in it.
Yes. She's such a gold-digger. Love Mary being shallow and selfish.
Who is dumber, Alfred or Daisy? If they'd had a child, would said offspring be able to feed himself? Discuss.
I just posted this upthread, sorry—but apparently Fellowes has stated in the backstory that Cora's father was a Jew who converted, see the TVTropes page for DA.
