Well, as someone who identified somewhat with punk when I was younger (and no, this wasn't in the 70s): I think that there was (and likely still is) a general understanding that 'punk' is a continuously-evolving project, rather than just a matter of fidelity to the general ethic espoused by a handful of late-70s rock

Hey, now…

The term I used to use before 'cis' came around was 'non-trans,' which always just felt awkward - 'cis' is much more sensible. (Also, would just like to note that I'm a cis person who's fine with referring to myself as such.)

Not sure if everyone knows this, but he didn't actually say that anime was a mistake (though he did say that he thinks there are too many otaku in the anime world and that the industry is hurting because of it).

I genuinely would watch those. Link?

I loved the Phantom Tollbooth cartoon as a kid but yeah, I remember it feeling kinda cheap even then.

For some reason my parents never let me watch this movie. It's weird, because they were pretty open and tolerant about media and generally let me watch whatever - Aliens, The Terminator and RoboCop were among my favorites as a kid - so I assumed that there must've been something especially dark and horrifying about

My favorite tidbit of information about Bill O'Reilly is that after he was fired from CBS, he wrote a mystery novel in which a serial killer brutally tortures and murders the various employees of a major television network.

The people who specifically hate indie-rock stars bowling for abortion access. There aren't that many of them out there, but they REALLY hate it.

Ah man, the other day I was listening to some doom metal and chopping carrots and I accidentally cut my finger, so I think I probably sacrificed myself to Satan there.

I'm really glad to see the return of Silly Little Show-Biz Book Club, and I hope it again becomes a somewhat regular thing (you have my clicks, in other words). This was basically my favorite AV Club feature back in ye olden days, and there are several lines/turns of phrase from those earlier entries that somehow

Not to be too much of a snob here (he says before writing something snobby), but the average Japanese sensibility just tends towards less sweetness in sweets all around - the extreme sweetness of many American confections is seen as a sort of overkill. Actually I think this extends to many other east-Asian cultures;

I just hope this 'allegory' stuff doesn't find its way into poetry - that would be a mess.

She was OK in that movie, but I think she laid it on too thick; like, overselling the awkwardness and befuddlement of early adolescence. Honestly, that movie gave me much more of an appreciation for the subtlety of Hanks's performance in Big (in contrast with Garner's overacting).

It seems to me that a few generations ago, these sorts of Christian-themed narratives of reward and punishment (for lack of a better term) would have Satan as the one who grants peoples' immediate wishes (to their ultimate detriment, of course) while God doesn't give people immediate happiness and satisfaction so much

This joke has already been made. Your contribution has been duly noted. Please find a funnier joke.

Luke, I am your father. And your brother. And your son. And your niece.

My counterpoint here would be Tarkovsky, who was deeply religious and intended his films to be - at least somewhat - expressions of his Christian faith (his films didn't necessarily hew to traditional narrative structure, but he certainly knew how to tell compelling stories with film). But, his approach to religion

Yeah I had never heard of 'em before so I checked out their Bandcamp. I'm into it…

What I thought of was this:
