You're right - I did mean 5 and 6, but in my haste I added 4. 4 is a bit of a slog which suffers due to the lack of fun supporting cast around Walker and Diesel (Jordana - well, she tries.)
4, 5 and 6 are pretty great action films on their own terms, no retroactive acclaim needed. They're not Shakespeare, but they are fun, well-directed with coherent action sequences and better than expected characterization because of the cast continuity.
It's considered the worst on terms of the lead character and plot (which were completely unrelated to the first two flims until they retconned the popular Han into the next three) but the best thematically and visually - the Zen-lite philosophical approach to drifting is not bad and the actual racing/drifting scenes…
It's a little remiss to talk about Sons & Daughters without mentioning Goss' previous show Significant Others (not the one with Jennifer Garner). It was another semi-improv show about various couples going through couples' therapy and the family/friendship connections between. Goss had a hand in creating both shows…
But where did he get the bread, Bart ? WHERE DID HE GET THE BREAD?
The Freys would be in the hospitality/events and catering business, no doubt.
I disagree - he looked like someone who could have kicked ass 20 years ago and then went to seed. Look at college athletes 20 years after they didn't go pro.
The Tyrells would be some Monsanto-style agribusiness behemoth, pitching 'organic' goods to the Essos markets while filling Westeros with GMO wheat.
His scream/sob of "you're a monster" and the way it plays across Philip's face is one of the most devastating reaction shots ever on this show.
It was great - a little 20 minute long scene between 2 women acting the hell out of it.
The production designer was one of the featured guests on Slate's Americans podcast this week (the costume designer was the other). I know I mention it every week, but that podcast is great and always gets amazing stuff from the crew.
To circle back on the surrogate mother/doppleganger relationship between Liz and Betty: when Elizbeth asked her mother about joining Directorate S, her mother never hesitated. She never gave a second thought about protecting her daughter from the cruelty she would both endure and inflict on the world. Betty can speak…
It's not surprising - the most basic interpersonal human need is not to be loved, feared or respected: it's to be understood.
I think she got cast in a role that didn't fit her - I know that physically she's capable of having a 5 year old son, but nothing about her performance sold me as this single mom who's seduced these men into doing anything she wants. She can do sexy/seductive but there's no hard-bitten edge to it - no need to her…
I posted to correct the M*A*S*H reference - the character's name was Spear Chucker Jones, not Spearcatcher - and the comment was deleted! Seriously, AV Club?
SpearCHUCKER! Not Spearcatcher - can't believe no one's corrected that yet! Spearcatcher isn't nearly casually racist enough!
OK, admittedly I'm being a bit hyperbolic about nothing being set in some of these places - there are some micro-indies and docs that make a quick splash on the festival circuit and go straight to VOD (Foreign Parts and Redemption come to mind) but I meant more of a semi-wide release indie like this film or bigger.
I know there are movies and shows filmed in non-Manhattan neighborhoods(there are TV studios in Long Island City, Astoria and Gowanus), but there are few SET there. Your last two movies set there are 20 and 30 years old. It's one of the reasons I love Frequency - it's a mediocre movie, but there are so few set in…
Pretty much - it's between Park Slope and Boerum/Cobble Hill - two wealthier neighborhoods with more private homes than apartments. It was pretty industrial - hence the Superfund canal - so a lot of the old warehouses are being converted to arts spaces (The Americans shoot there) or small businesses. There are some…
