Well, to be fair, it's probably a lot easier to write for someone who you like and who's excited and enthusiastic about what you're doing, than for someone who's needy or difficult or even not bringing a lot to the table.

Seriously, it's the same reason the Tony's are always the best awards show. It's like these people know how to put on a live production or something.
Plus it took the obligatory Hamilton(-inspired, at least) number and just skyrocketed it. Like compared to the Sweeny Todd thing or the James Cordon number at the Tony's, this was a Hamilton parody that was a smart, relevant, exciting song on its own merits.
I mean, I was glad Tina at least called him out on the hair mussing instead of just glossing over it like SNL for like 6 months did with having Trump host.
That was genuinely sweet how he respected her right to the floor as well.
I…unironicaly love Moulin Rouge. And stage musicals. I'm genuinely thrilled about this.
Clips from the whole telecast are up on Youtube now! https://www.youtube.com/pla…
Honestly I think it comes down to the fact that the medium they're honoring is meant to be seen live, so they have a built in leg up on other awards shows. Add to that the fact that it just feels a little..scrappier? dorkier? than something like the Oscars or the Emmys, and it's easily my favorite awards shows.
I've heard rumors of an unauthorized bootlegged cell phone recording of the show floating around the internet…I'm obsessed with this show and all the people involved and that's why I've managed to restrain myself from seeking this alleged recording out, but GODDAMIT WHY WON'T THEY TAKE MY MONEY
I saw it a few weeks ago. It's a fun show, but it didn't blow my mind. The kids are insanely talented but the staging/choreography is a bit of a mess and any scenes that don't involve the kids drag. I got into it on the lottery and it was a perfectly pleasant evening, but I wouldn't pay full price for it.
Ah yes, the annual "number to confuse regular CBS viewers who just happened to tune in tonight"
How awkward would that final number have been if they lost though? "And the winner for best musical is…Shuffle Along, and to take us out, the company of Hamilton!"
On the other hand, it was a good opportunity to take a bathroom break…
Thank you! That's really been bothering me. Like I get that Trump the actual person basically kills parody, but McKinnon's HRC is so specific and pointed and Hammond's Trump is just kind of flailing in a bunch of "hurr durr cartoon character" directions. I imagine it's hard to get a handle on a Trump parody because…
Agreed, I definitely can't watch any of their jokes about him now without the filter of them having had him host. It can't work as pure satire or even critique, because it's implicitly pushing back against giving him a platform at a point where it was really critical whether he was getting that media platform. Maybe…
I really liked his Dirty Dancing! But yeah, as others pointed out, he didn't even rank high enough to get to play the corpse.
It's been absolutely magnificent, hasn't it? I remember having to convince people who didn't live in the state how much we all hated him and now the rest of the country has finally caught up.
Yeah, and I didn't even think about the (almost complete) absence of Kymmi and Xan and how Kimmy didn't really need teenage foils this year.
Oh no…we already went through Kimmy's helplessness expressed through the ineffectiveness of the justice system. I hope that's not the direction they take this plot in.
Tina Fey is so great. Even when she's playing characters who are total messes I still get a general sense of competence from her that's just so compelling.
