A thousand pardons, Mr. Murray, for calling you Josh earlier; i must have been thinking about something Mr. Modell wrote. Like most things, I blame Rob Liefeld.
El Santo-my biggest problem with Liefeld-besides atrocious anatomy-is that he's not intentionally silly (or wasn't; I haven't actually picked up anything of

God I hated the very idea of Hal Jordan going crazy. Still do. And nothing explains Rob Fucking Liefeld's career except a deal with Mephisto.

That's true, Barry's death actually MEANT something more than a publicity stunt; it fit the story and his personality. And back then, people usually stayed dead in comics, at least for a while.
Bringing him back sort of cheapens the whole ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty to me, also.

We have met the enemy, and he is us…
Pogo was the shit, man, you could have done a lot worse. No Pogo, probably no Doonsbury or Calvin & Hobbes.
I'm probably overstating, but not by much.

One of the highlights of my life so far was getting to see the Ramones live. Towards the end of their career, true, but it's something many people younger than me will never get to experience.

I was six when Star Wars first hit theaters in 1977. I still remember like it was yesterday the moment during the assault on the Death Star when the Millennium Falcon comes diving out of nowhere to save Luke's bacon, Han comes over the radio, "You're all clear, kid,…" and the entire sro audience (of mostly

Ricin: best moment from John Stewart's lat night show-Don Ho coming on and performing the Beastie boys' Sabotage. A true "Is this really happening or am I having an hallucination?" moment.
The second best thing ever to be shown ON tv, as a matter of fact. I can prove it editing Wikipedia.

This movie sounds like it also has shades of Mr. Destiny thrown in for the hell of it.

Better than having his dick in your computer.

Nobody's got any love for Dead At 21? Or even Undressed? I hardly know you people anymore…

This panel show…
What is it called? And is there anywhere we can see it outside of Canada? The web, maybe. This is the very definition of must see tv, eh?

Now I'm picturing Brad Renfro as Renfield…disturbing. Not as disturbing as picturing Tom Waits in Bully, though.

That actually sounds more like an episode of the Ray Bradbury Theater called The Playground. Both shows were on HBO at about the same time.
was William Shatner in it?

You're right about J.L. Burke, ghost, on both counts. He tells a great story and really nails the atmosphere of south Louisiana, but he can be a bit repititous. I stopped counting at nine repeats of the phrase "under a black flag" in Tin Roof Blowdown. Even so they're great reads. He's got another series character

You beat me to it Xavier, with TSMD. Definitely check that one out, Floyd, it addresses a lot of your questions. Also, check out The Demolished Man by the same author. Those two books are essential for sf fans.

The two movies that freaked me out…
when I was a kid were Jaws and the Omen, and both because of the music.
I know I was five when Jaws came out and I remember covering my eyes whenever the music started sppeding up-but not quick enough not to see the dead guy in the boat, which stuck in my head for years. The Omen

Old fashioned drama…It's all old fashioned drama, isn't it? I mean, no matter the trappings, there are only what, 3 basic plots anyway? Man vs. Man, Man vs. Nature, Man vs. Himself…even if the story can't happen without the science part (umm, The Forever War, maybe) the story still boils down to the human drama.
Or am

Dead end? No way. As long as science itself keeps advancing, so will science (or "speculative", a term I'm liking more as I get older) fiction will too. There will always be someone that'll ask "Hey, what if THIS happened? Or this? And What if…?" The subject matter will change, but it always has; ther are just stories

You're right about that movie, Jim, god damn did it suck. And, as someone on the MYOF entry pointed out, it did so badly that no other Hiaasen has been adapted since (except Hoot, which doesn't really count; kid's movie) so we've never gotten Skink on film.

Ellroy's got a new novel coming out this year, xochi, but from the excerpt in playboy a couple of months ago it looks like more of the same style as cold 6000.
