The SWD was in the vault when Rory was creeping around.. it did not, however, come to life onscreen. More's the pity… And an interesting touch, since - as has no doubt been pointed out - Aaronivitch's Remembrance novelization does mention the SWD as being so messed up in the head that other Daleks were afraid of it…

I see.. annoying that slipped by me, then, as I saw Firefly only after the DVD came out, so all the episodes were seen in relatively quick sequence.

I have never really been a very big Firefly fan, considering it to be a tad overrated (them's lynching words, I know..) and 'War Stories' particularly really bugged the heck out of me. I did enjoy the atypical sight of the hero declining the opportunity to get vengeance on his torturer mano e mano,  but the rest…

I still feel that the Kandy Man gets a bum rap.. he fits in very well with the entire setup, and is a wonderfully bizarre creation.
