yeah, the internet stuff is dated, but if you think about when it was written and where people thought technology would go, it makes a fair amount of sense

i think the battle scenes and the Asha'man stuff redeem book eight. nine has the pretty awesome ending, but fuck all happens the rest of the book, and ten is Jordan completely treading water.
yeah, i started reading it when i was in middle school and the third book had just come out, so i have that same problem- the Mars/Venus shit is particularly grating now- but it's such a damn interesting world and the magic system is so well done that i still end up recommending it to people.
which PKD?
i'd say to read Wind after finishing the series- it's a story set in the universe of the series, but not an essential piece of the series
books nine and ten of WoT are serious slogs and eleven is kind of a rush job, but the series picks back up with the Sanderson-penned entries. his tone doesn't match perfectly and he's clearly checking off a list of plot points that need to get wrapped up, but at least shit finally starts happening again.
Snow Crash is fun and full of great/scary ideas (and, like any Stephenson, some geeky exposition), particularly if you keep in mind the year it was released. also, after you're done, check out the news stories from a few months back about the private cities in Honduras, shit is crazy.

i really dug The Wind Through the Keyhole and sincerely hope that King will pop back into Mid-World from time to time when he's feeling more inspiration than perspiration (even though i loved the last three Dark Tower books, i can see why other people didn't)

you can remember anything aside from that fucking horrible ending? ugh, fuck that book.

Savages is great- you should also check out his Neal Carey series, which was recently re-released, and Josh Bazell's Beat the Reaper (although i would suggest staying far, far away from its sequel)

most of the people i know that enjoyed it are the "i don't read genre fiction" types and are pleasantly surprised with themselves at liking something that isn't capital-L Literature. the characters in Gone Girl are thoroughly unlikable and i was happy to have someone just tell me the ending.

Blueprints was my favorite book of the year, too- got a lot of Stephenson and PKD flavor out of it
