I recall Ted the Caver as being very creepy, although it was really disappointing to learn the whole thing was a plagiarism. The Dionaea House is aces though.

Oh man, Silent Hill 2 was traumatic, especially with Pyramid Head.  I played Silent Hill 3 with a friend over a week where we were home alone in her parents' house.  If she hadn't owned a large Labrador we would have probably ended up moving in with her neighbors for a few days.

The House With A Clock In Its Walls and other John Bellairs were very popular scary reading, but I remember being really traumatized by The Dollhouse Murders.  Something about the little dolls moving at night and reenacting the deaths of the people they were modeled on was unfathomably creepy.  It was also probably

The Scary Story about the scarecrow that murders the farmhand and dries his skin on the roof was one of the most traumatic things I read as kid.  You can image how much worse the illustration made that experience.

I had a couple of days where I was convinced if I turned around, I'd find stationary objects behind me had moved.  It's just as well there was no topiary where I grew up.

I recommend you try "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson, who wrote The Lottery.  It's an awesome haunted house novella. It's very tightly plotted, and wonderfully creepy.  I read it in high school and was hooked by the opening paragraph, which proposed that the house itself was insane.

I love that bear costume so much.  Never was the lack of an explanation so sweet.
