I don't doubt he's raking it in, but some of this is clearly exaggerated, e.g. the six-figure book advance. Celebrity book advances are always exaggerated because people wouldn't pay attention (or just laugh) if they knew the real figure. I would guess low to mid five figures. You can list me as "a source" for

collect calling
Thinking about pagers, pay phones, and other stuff killed by cell phones reminded me of the time in the mid-late 1990s when it seemed as if every long distance carrier had their own 1-800 number for collect calling on their network. For a brief time, they were advertised on TV relentlessly, and then

My girlfriend loves this show, despite knowing (presumably) that smart people do not generally talk like 8-year-olds anxious to prove their 9-year-old siblings wrong about something.

(Your scrotum.)

teenagers
Phipps comment about teenagers hit home with me. Revisiting some of the 1980s movies that formed my view of teenagerdom before I got there, I realized that it was probably an indirect consequence of the way adults were portrayed in a lot of classic movies. In "The Breakfast Club" for example the principal

maybe just a little better than if your only knowledge of his work came from Jerkcity.

and so it is with a heavy heart that I must cancel my paid subscription to the AV Club.

Never heard of her before now.

The video for that Celine song in this reminded me a whole lot of "Miracles."

the redd foxx
Not sure that you just made this up—- I've seen something similar in a number of Bay Area rap DVDs. In one of them it was called "The Elizabeth Dance."

Undoubtedly the first (and last) time any human being will ever utter the words "I can't recall if this was pre or post Shasta McNasty."

I'm not worried, I get all of my music with Scour and its helpful Scour Media Agent.

When I saw The Thin Red Line, I couldn't stop thinking, "This is exactly the movie I would make if I wanted to do a piss-take of 'thoughtful' war movies." Exactly. It was eerie.

Chico, the technical term for a "Hutchence/Carradine maneuver" is a "strangle wank."

Telefutura
I never noticed until just now, but Telefutura basically does "Films that time forgot" every night. At least, that's where I've seen tons of these movies.

A silly Pitchfork moment that really stands out in my mind is the review of Devin the Dude's "Waitin' to Inhale". The reviewer misses the incredibly obvious double meaning of the song "Cutcha Up" while making that song a main exhibit in a lamentation about how Devin has foregone his usual humor in favor of dirty

"The Giant Spider Invasion" was also made in 1975. Although it wasn't Hollywood, it was definitely another standout film in a standout year.

AFAIK Faygo is not available in many parts of the country, except perhaps at weird stores that people with a choice would never shop at. But it's in almost any grocery store in Michigan (where it's originally from). And I have seen it on the shelves at normal stores in Illinois and Iowa. Outside of that, I dunno.

favorite corman picture?
It's hard to choose one.

Wow, I thought everybody knew the Destiny's Child story, and the context of "Survivor". Depending on who you get your info from, the details vary, but the rough outline is the same.
