I read that Abrams, Kurtzman and Orci had thought out an 8 season plan before the show was put in to production. I wouldn't be surprised at all if this storyline is a glimpse at what they had planned. If this episode connects to the rumoured 5th season, Fringe is clearly going to go off on an incredible high.

Relating to the excellent post by puddleglumpilgrim, the British documentary maker Louis Theroux, recently did a documentary on an autistic school in America. It shows a wide range of how autism affects different people and you can see aspects of Abed in many of them.
