It is a bit disappointing that Max can't jump worth a shit in this game.
Both games have their "tedious gameplay" moments. Arkham's is the tank battles and Max's is the button-pressing-scavenging.
Max definitely talks too much in the game. I probably wouldn't mind if he had a vocal presence similar to Rob Wiethoff's John Marston (Red Dead Redemption) but whoever they found for Max is so generic and pointless that they would have been better making him a silent protagonist.
