Non-count nouns are often liquids, but there are a few other nouns that are non-count. We refer to them by their group, size, or serving when we want to make a count…. like a head of lettuce, a cup of flour, or a stick of gum.

"A milk" — you're counting the container, the amount, not the liquid inside. It's a short-hand, a simplification. That's why native speakers say "a beer" or "a soda" even though those are both non-count nouns.

"Non-count" is a standard term.
