The television nominees seem a little bit off, but to some degree I think it's because there are fewer and fewer truly great shows. This article does a great job of discussing what's gone semi-wrong since the so-called "golden age" of dramas, and what they need to do to make something really special again.

On the television end of things, I think they got it pretty much right. I've seen people complaining a bit that it's all too familiar, but the problem in this case isn't with the voters, it's with the showrunners. In the last several years there's been a ton of good new shows, but I'd say very few (if any) great ones.

Mumford and Sons is like what would have happened if Interpol's major label deal was a huge success. This article really brought back those memories of when Interpol was so great, and does a good job of getting into where exactly it went so wrong for them.

Danes is giving probably the best performance on television, but I wish there was a stronger all-around female cast. Jessica has her moments, but other than that its pretty slim picking. Was just reading this article on how the best dramas on TV are in part great because of their strong women (Mad Men and Game of

Think my favorite piece of pop culture from this year was Roberto Bolano's "Woes of the True Policeman." This article encouraged me to check it out.
