In the pilot, Maddie said that Michael had missed his father's funeral by 8 years…so if we're counting 5 seasons as 5 years, his dad died in 1998.

On the season one dvd extras, they show that one of the twins who plays hope is always doing that face.  Maybe thats where they got the idea for the episode
