I know it was revealed to the pertinent characters that the story was discredited, but I can't remember if the public ever found out that the story was false. Even if they did, it's likely that the swiftboating dogged Chung's campaign enough to make him lose in the primaries and drop out of the race.

It's been a while since I've read them, but I do remember the series losing some steam around The Slippery Slope. I'd recommend finishing the series, especially with the Netflix series coming.I plan on rereading the books now that I'm old enough to pick up on the literary references.
