@avclub-e3f5ab7f02122f95b801e13e2c586d6a:disqus  I have read some Runyon that was surprisingly grim though.  That's to be expected as he knew these people in real life.

@avclub-e7af19935015fb11dedb9fbb2955f880:disqus Yes, this is true.  I kept hoping Richard would get a chance to see "The Man Who Laughs" but then I realized that the premiere date didn't work out with the series timeline. (Although that may have changed… I haven't checked since they moved the show forward in time.)

Gangsters essentially see cops as "Made Men" in another, rival, crime family.  (Which, from my cop relatives, is something the cops basically hate but have to deal with.)  It's not that you can't kill them, it's that you don't start a war with no reason behind it.  (Ask a deep cover cop in a mob organization how well

Nucky's accent is probably something he worked long and hard to establish.  He heard someone who he felt was more refined then his awful family and deliberately worked at mimicking him.  Eli didn't even understand why he would do that.

My parents disapproved of petting zoos. I had an Aunt who took me once and they cut off all communication with her when they found out about it.

I think the Root character was basically a version of Nucky's pre-Prohibition job of political fixer.  Just on a Federal level as opposed to a State level.

I read about real life Mickey (seriously, there was a real guy who did all that same Mickey stuff, like changing Polish name for Irish name.  However, like Nucky he's a fictionalized version, not the actual guy like Rothstein or Capone) but I fortunately forgot his whole story.
