I think that, when it was written, he was supposed to be more beaten down. The character's definitely more likable in, say, All Roads than when he's weighed down by Chanandler Bong's horrible voice acting.

The way it works is that there are two screws. They don't come out. A washer wrapped around them makes them crash down when they're 'too' loose, resetting them to normal. I've stripped the head on one of the two, but that's only enough to unhook the one side.
