The Curse
There are 4 films in "The Curse" series, none of which have any relation to each other at all. None of them were made to be sequels, all were retitled for North American realease.

American Psycho II
It didn't start out as a sequel to "American Psycho", which pretty much explains it's complete lack of continuity with the first film.

Exorcist II: The Heretic
I call him de good locust.

LaBute did have quite a brilliant run with "In the Company of Men", "Your Friends and Neighbors" and "The Shape of Things". That his subsequent films have ranged from the mediocre to the terrible doesn't really change the fact that his best films are far more dark and caustic than Payne's films.
